Welcome to The Structure of Man training course. Drawing the human figure entirely from your mind—in any angle and any dynamic pose—has been a lifelong dream for many artists. In Lesson 1, we lay the groundwork for exactly how to achieve this by deeply understanding the mechanics of figure drawing.
An example of what you will be able to accomplish: a complex figure drawn completely from the mind.
Moving Beyond Reference: The Concept of Invention
For decades, traditional art schools have relied heavily on observational drawing. While copying a live model is a critical skill, it traps the artist. When the model leaves the room, the artist is suddenly paralyzed, unable to draw complex scenes required for comic books, storyboarding, or character design.
To break out of this trap, you must learn the concept of invention. Throw out the idea that the human figure already exists. Instead, we are going to design our own creation—a human-like figure constructed with our own specific set of rules. When you dictate the rules of the design, you become its master.
Just like creating a simple shape out of our mind, having predefined rules means you can reproduce it instantly, from any angle.
The Essential Tools for Figure Drawing
Before we dive into the formulas, you need the right tools. A standard drafting pencil (such as an HB lead holder) and a kneaded eraser are all you need. A lead holder is excellent because you can easily maintain a sharp point, allowing for crisp, precise construction lines.
A simple HB lead holder and a kneaded eraser are the perfect tools to start this journey.
The Step-by-Step Training Process: The First Blueprint
This course relies on a deeply structured, step-by-step cognitive process. We build up your knowledge in small micro-bursts, introducing formulas piece by piece.
Let's map out our first fundamental rule: the proportions of the human figure. No matter what character design you create, these underlying rules remain constant:
- The Height Line: Draw a simple vertical line to establish the height of your invention.
- The Crotch Area: Mark the exact center of this line. This will always define the crotch area.
- The Knees: Find the midpoint between the crotch and the bottom of the line. The knees will always sit above this point.
- The Pec Muscles: Divide the top half (from the top of the line to the crotch) in half. This marks the bottom of the pectoral muscles.
- The Chin: Halve the section above the pec line to define the bottom of the chin, which gives us the height of the head.
- The Navel: Finally, between the pec line and the crotch line, find the midpoint to mark the navel area.
Our secret formula for proportions: Chin, Pecs, Navel, Crotch, and Knees perfectly mapped out.
Building the Conceptual Form
Once the blueprint is set, we begin constructing the mannequin using simple forms. Starting with an egg shape for the head, we don't worry about details at this stage. The goal is to train the mind on the fundamental concepts. We map out the V-shape of the clavicle and build an egg-like structure for the chest cavity.
Adding simple shapes like the egg-shaped head and chest cavity onto our blueprint.
