After mastering the side and front view formulas, we now face the most critical challenge in anatomical invention: The 3/4 View. In Lesson 13, we don't just "sketch" a tilted head; we use a rigorous mathematical projection method to translate our 2D formulas into a functional 3D space. This lesson focuses on the structural setup that makes 3D thinking possible.
The starting point: A high-accuracy side view constructed using the 'Secret Formula' rules.
Transitioning to 3D Thinking
Most artists struggle with the 3/4 view because they try to "eyeball" the proportions. In this phase of the course, Riven Phoenix introduces the Microverse Concept: the idea of taking small, manageable units of anatomical information and layering them systematically. We begin by drawing a perfect side-view skull on one side of the canvas to serve as our master reference.
The 'Ruler Trick': Using a straight edge to project horizontal landmarks from the profile onto a new 3D axis.
The Geometric Projection Method
To ensure our 3/4 view remains anatomically consistent with our side view, we use a technical projection method. By establishing a new vertical axis at an angle, we use a ruler (or the edge of a piece of paper) to pull exact horizontal lines from the side view's key landmarks:
- The Cranium Top & Bottom
- The Brow Line & Eye Line
- The Base of the Nose
- The Mouth & Chin
This "tilted grid" creates a 3D coordinate system where every feature has a mathematically defined home, preventing the "skewed face" syndrome common in beginner figure drawings.
Structural Mapping: Translating the front-view width formulas onto the new tilted 3D grid.
Discovery and Adjustment
Lesson 13 is a "Discovery Phase." As we map the front-view features onto our new 3/4 grid, we begin to see how organic shapes—like the opening of the nose and the tapering of the jaw—behave as they turn in space. We establish the width of the head and the placement of the eye socket boxes, creating a rock-solid structural cage. In the next lesson, we will begin layering the organic bone structures over this mathematical foundation.
